Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I operate a small business and do not produce much waste. Do I still have to pre-treat that waste?
A. The short answer is ‘yes’. However pre-treatment does not have to be onerous. It could be a simple as separating out all your waste paper and cardboard for recycling.

Q. I do not have room on my premises for a lot of different bins for separate waste types, so how do I pre-treat?
A. There are two possible solutions. Viridor can either make a full waste assessment to see if what combination of bins and collection schedule would be appropriate; or we can do the pre-treatment for you.

Q. The content of my bins does not change from week to week. Do I have to supply a Pre-Treatment Confirmation Form every week?
A. No. In such cases it is sufficient to complete a Pre-Treatment Confirmation Form annually.

Q. I occasionally deliver a load of waste to my local landfill. What do I do now?
A. From October 30 you will have to prove that every load has been pre-treated and provide a Pre-Treatment Confirmation Form at the weighbridge in order to tip. It may be easier for you to use a Waste Transfer Station where we can provide re-treatment in future. Call you nearest Viridor office or email us using the Contact Form for further information.

Q. What is pre-treated waste?
A. Wastes are defined as ‘treated’ if the characteristics of the waste have been changed in one of four ways. These are by:

  1. Reducing its volume, for example by removing recyclable materials such as glass, plastic and paper.
  2. Changing its nature, for example by chemical treatment so as to reduce its hazardous nature.
  3. Making it easier to handle.
  4. Enhancing its recovery.
